Sumba 5-Day Private Tour: West + East Sumba Complete Itinerary

Sumba 5-Day Private Tour: West + East Sumba Complete Itinerary

Honest planning note: Sumba’s roads are mostly 1–1.5-lane asphalt and dirt tracks, so driving times are real-world ranges that change with weather, and a high-clearance or 4WD vehicle is often advised. Pasola dates are not on any fixed calendar — they are confirmed by Marapu priests (Rato) only about 1–2 weeks ahead, across February–March. Sumba is malaria-endemic, so consult a travel doctor 4–8 weeks before departure; we are a logistics concierge, not a medical authority. Prices are non-binding indicative ranges (last verified mid-2026); your exact quote follows a short planning conversation. We are an independent trip-design and guiding concierge and coordinate vetted local guides and drivers.

Hello, I’m Dian Kusumawati. For the last nine years, I have been creating private journeys across my home island of Sumba. It’s a place of ancient traditions, raw landscapes, and a spirit that is entirely its own.

This Sumba 5-day itinerary is designed to give you a complete and honest perspective of the island, travelling overland from the lush, village-dotted landscapes of the west to the stark, savannah beauty of the east. It is not a resort holiday; it is an immersion. You will travel on roads that are sometimes challenging, meet communities whose lives are guided by ancient Marapu beliefs, and see landscapes that have remained unchanged for centuries.

My role is to connect you to Sumba authentically. This means preparing you for the realities of travel here—the long drives, the changing weather, the need for cultural sensitivity—while ensuring your journey is seamless, safe, and deeply memorable. This is a Sumba full island tour for the curious and respectful traveller.

Your Sumba Island 5 Days: The Complete Itinerary

This journey is a logical progression from West to East Sumba, designed to minimise backtracking and maximise your experience of the island’s diversity. We begin at Tambolaka Airport (TMC) in the west and conclude at Waingapu Airport (WGP) in the east.

### **Day 1: Arrival in West Sumba & The Coastal Frontier**

* **Morning (10:00 AM):** Arrive at Tambolaka Airport (TMC). Your private guide and driver will meet you directly outside the small arrivals hall, holding a sign with your name. We will load your luggage into our comfortable 4WD vehicle—a necessity for Sumba’s variable roads—and begin our journey.
* **Lunch (12:30 PM):** We’ll stop for lunch at a simple, clean local restaurant in Tambolaka, giving you your first taste of Sumbanese cuisine.
* **Afternoon (2:00 PM):** Our first destination is **Weekuri Lagoon**, a crystal-clear saltwater lagoon separated from the ocean by a rocky ridge. The water’s colour shifts from turquoise to deep blue depending on the tide and sun.
* **Dian’s Note:** The coral rock surrounding the lagoon is sharp and unforgiving. Please wear sturdy water shoes or sandals, not flip-flops. There’s a small wooden diving platform, but always check the water depth before jumping as it changes with the tide.
* **Late Afternoon (4:00 PM):** We drive south to **Ratenggaro Village**, one of the most visually dramatic traditional villages in Sumba. Its name means ‘graves of the Garo people’. Here, you will see towering, thatched-roof houses (some reaching over 20 metres high) set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. Ancient megalithic tombs stand directly among the homes, a constant reminder of the community’s connection to their ancestors.
* **Cultural Context:** Upon arrival, your guide will perform the customary greeting, which involves presenting a small gift of *sirih pinang* (betel nut) to the village elder. This is a sign of respect and formally requests permission to enter and learn. We will handle this for you. You are a guest in a living community, not a museum.
* **Evening:** Check into your accommodation.

**Accommodation:** Mario Hotel & Cafe (Tambolaka) or similar.

### **Day 2: Waterfalls, Villages, and the Pasola Coast**

* **Morning (8:30 AM):** After breakfast, we drive inland towards the heart of West Sumba. Our destination is **Lapopu Waterfall**, located within the Manupeu Tanah Daru National Park. A short, pleasant 15-minute walk through forest and across a bamboo bridge brings you to the base of the multi-tiered falls. The water cascades down a wide rock face into a deep, clear pool.
* **Dian’s Note:** In the wet season (December-March), the waterfall is powerful and the spray is immense. In the dry season (May-October), the flow is gentler, and the pool is very inviting for a swim.
* **Lunch (1:00 PM):** We will arrange a packed lunch to enjoy near the waterfall or find a local *warung* on our way to the next stop.
* **Afternoon (2:30 PM):** We visit **Praijing Village**, a traditional village with a different character from Ratenggaro. Built on a hillside, it offers a layered view of Sumbanese homes and daily life. It provides an excellent vantage point to understand the layout of a Marapu village, with the central square for ceremonies and the homes arranged around it. Here, you can often see women weaving or men tending to their livestock.
* **Late Afternoon (4:30 PM):** We explore the **Lamboya coast**, a stretch of long, windswept beaches. This area is famous as a primary location for the Pasola festival, a ritual battle between two groups of horsemen. While the festival itself is rare and its timing unpredictable, the beaches themselves are evocative. You may see the iconic Sumba horses running freely along the sand.

**Accommodation:** Lelewatu Resort Sumba (luxury option) or Rua Beach Resort (mid-range option).

### **Day 3: The Great Overland Journey to East Sumba**

* **Morning (8:30 AM):** Today is our transition day. We begin the overland journey from West to East Sumba. This is not just a transfer; it is a core part of your Sumba 5 day trip package. You will witness the island’s geography transform before your eyes.
* **The Drive:** The journey from the Lamboya area to Waingapu takes approximately 4-5 hours of driving time, not including stops. The roads are mostly paved but can be winding. We will pass from the greener, more humid landscapes of the west into the drier, open savannahs and rolling hills characteristic of the east. We will make stops for photos and to stretch our legs.
* **Lunch (12:30 PM):** We will stop for lunch at a local restaurant midway through our journey.
* **Afternoon (3:30 PM):** Arrive in the vicinity of Waingapu, the capital of East Sumba. We’ll check you into your hotel to rest and refresh after the drive.
* **Late Afternoon (4:30 PM):** We head to **Walakiri Beach** for sunset. This beach is known for its unique mangrove trees that, at low tide, create striking, dance-like silhouettes against the colourful sky. It is a popular spot for photographers and a peaceful place to mark your arrival in the east.

**Accommodation:** Morinda Villa & Resto (Waingapu) or Padadita Beach Hotel (Waingapu).

### **Day 4: Royal Ikat Weavers and Megalithic Mysteries**

* **Morning (9:00 AM):** We visit **Prailiu**, a traditional village right on the edge of Waingapu town. This village is a renowned centre for East Sumba’s famous *ikat* weaving. Here, you will meet the artisans—often entire families—and see the intricate, time-consuming process firsthand.
* **Cultural Context:** Sumbanese *ikat* is more than cloth; it is a narrative form that communicates social status, clan history, and spiritual beliefs. The dyes are derived from local plants and minerals, and a single large piece can take months, or even years, to complete. You will have the opportunity to purchase textiles directly from the weavers, a meaningful way to support their craft.
* **Lunch (12:30 PM):** Lunch in Waingapu.
* **Afternoon (2:00 PM):** We drive to a lesser-known but significant megalithic site, **Watu Maladong**. This is not a formal village but a collection of enormous, ancient stone slab tombs set in a quiet, rural landscape. It speaks to the deep history of ancestor worship and the incredible effort required to create these monuments.
* **Late Afternoon (4:00 PM):** Our final stop is **Konda Lake** (also known as Danau Weekacura). This is a serene, brackish lake surrounded by low hills. It is a quiet place, perfect for reflection and enjoying the calm atmosphere as the day winds down.

**Accommodation:** Morinda Villa & Resto (Waingapu) or Padadita Beach Hotel (Waingapu).

### **Day 5: Waingapu Market & Departure**

* **Morning (8:30 AM):** We spend our final morning at the **Waingapu town market**. This is an authentic local market, active with morning trade. It is a sensory experience—the smell of fresh fish, the vibrant colours of local produce, the sound of bargaining. It’s a wonderful final glimpse into the daily life of East Sumba before you depart.
* **Late Morning (10:30 AM):** We transfer you to Waingapu’s Mau Hau Airport (WGP) for your onward flight. We will ensure you are there with ample time for check-in. This concludes your west east Sumba tour.

Practical Information for Your Sumba Journey

An informed traveller is a happy traveller. Here are the honest details you need to know.

#### **Internal Transfer: Overland Drive vs. Internal Flight**

While a small plane sometimes connects Tambolaka (TMC) and Waingapu (WGP), we strongly recommend the overland journey for this itinerary.
* **Reliability:** The internal flight schedule is notoriously unreliable and subject to frequent cancellation.
* **Experience:** The 4-hour drive is a highlight, not a hassle. It’s the only way to truly appreciate the island’s dramatic geographical shift.
* **Continuity:** By hiring the same experienced driver and vehicle for the entire 5 days, you have continuity, security for your luggage, and the flexibility to stop whenever you wish.

#### **Accommodation in Sumba**

Sumba offers a range of accommodation, from world-class luxury resorts to simple, clean hotels and basic homestays. For this itinerary, we select the best available in each location based on your budget and preference—prioritising cleanliness, safety, and a good location. Outside of the luxury resorts, do not expect perfect Wi-Fi or international five-star service standards.

#### **Health & Safety**

* **Malaria:** Malaria is present in Sumba and is a serious consideration. We strongly advise you to consult your doctor or a travel clinic about preventative medication well before your trip. Using mosquito repellent, especially at dawn and dusk, is essential.
* **Roads:** While major routes are paved, conditions can change quickly, especially during the wet season (December – March). Potholes are common. Our drivers are local, experienced, and drive safely and defensively. All our vehicles are well-maintained 4WDs.
* **Sun & Dehydration:** The sun is intense. Please bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. It is vital to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of bottled water, which we will provide in the vehicle.

#### **Cultural Respect: Entering the Marapu World**

The traditional communities of Sumba practice a unique animist religion called Marapu. Ancestors are revered, and life is governed by intricate rituals and traditions.
* **Your Guide is Your Bridge:** Your guide is not just a translator but a cultural facilitator. They understand the local customs and will ensure your presence is respectful.
* **Entering a Village:** We never just walk into a village. Your guide will always seek out the *kepala desa* (village head) or a Rato (priest) to formally ask permission. The gift of *sirih pinang* is part of this.
* **Photography:** Always ask permission before taking photos of people, especially elders. Never take photos during a private ceremony or ritual unless explicitly invited to do so.
* **Dress:** When visiting villages, please dress modestly. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees. A simple t-shirt and long shorts or trousers are appropriate.
