Sumba is Indonesia's hidden treasure. From pristine beaches to enchanting waterfalls it weaves a captivating tapestry of natural wonders - and it is not only a visual delight, but a cultural journey through traditions still practised in the villages you will walk into.
The island changes colour through the year. December to March is green season, April and May hold the turn from green to yellow, and June to November is the yellow season, when the savanna looks the way Sumba is photographed.

Villages, a saltwater lagoon, two waterfalls, savanna and four sunsets - crossing the island from Southwest Sumba to East Sumba.
Pero Beach
Open surf on the west coast, and the first sunset of the trip on day one.
Weekuri Lagoon
Saltwater held back from the open sea by a wall of rock. Day two, alongside Mandorak Beach.
Prai Ijing Traditional Village
A hillside village in West Sumba, visited on day two before the climb to Warinding.
Warinding Hill
Wave after wave of grass hills, and the sunset that closes day two.
Tanarara Savanna
Open grassland in East Sumba, the first stop on the morning of day three.
Waimarang Waterfall
A pool at the bottom of a steep, slippery path. Day three, alternating with Tanggedu.
Walakiri Beach
The mangroves that bend like dancers at low tide. Sunset on day three.

Both run the same route. The open trip has fixed Thursday departures and a shared car; a private trip runs on your dates with the car to yourselves, and extends to five or six days.

What the price covers
Nine things are included on every departure, open trip and private alike. Only two are not: flight tickets and personal spending.
Entrance fees
Every site on the itinerary, paid for you at the gate.
Drone & mirrorless documentation
A photographer travels with the group. Files are copied to your hard disk on day three.
Donation fees
The customary contribution at each traditional village.
Mineral water
Kept in the car for the length of the trip.
Nine meals
Every meal from lunch on day one to breakfast on the final morning.
Tour leader
With the group from the airport pickup to the final drop-off.
Hotels, twin share
Sinar Tambolaka in Southwest Sumba, Padadita in East Sumba, or equivalent.
Airport pickup
From Tambolaka Airport (TMC) or a hotel nearby, on the first day.

Pick a package and a date
Open trip departures run every Thursday through 2026. A private trip runs on whatever dates you choose, as long as the hotels have room.

Send us your details
Names and ages of everyone travelling, a contact number, how many of you there are, and your pickup and drop-off points.

Pay 50% to hold it
The balance is due no later than 14 days before departure. Booking inside those 14 days means paying in full at once.

We meet you at Tambolaka
Pickup is between 11.00 and 12.00 WITA on day one. The trip finishes at 11.00 WITA at Waingapu Airport.
Fly in a day early and out a day late if you can. The itinerary is fixed and cannot be moved around a flight time, and arriving late at the meeting point counts as a no-show.

Where the trip starts and ends
The trip begins at 12.00 WITA at Tambolaka Airport (TMC) in Southwest Sumba, or at a hotel nearby - pickup is between 11.00 and 12.00. It finishes at 11.00 WITA on the last day at Waingapu Airport (WGP) in East Sumba, on the far side of the island.
