Packing

Eleven things on the list, and two nobody expects

The packing list is short. The two items travellers arrive without are a hard disk for the trip photographs and a Telkomsel SIM.

In short

Pack for sun, for water and for a steep muddy path - and bring an external hard disk, because the drone and camera files are copied to you on day three and a flash drive is too slow.

  • Trekking shoes or sandals are required, not flip-flops. The descent to the waterfalls is steep and slippery.
  • A water-resistant daypack keeps a camera safe at the lagoon and the falls.
  • Telkomsel has the best coverage on the island - buy the SIM before you arrive.
  • Anyone with a medical history should consult a doctor first and bring their own medication.

The list

What actually goes in the bag

Straight from the trip sheet.

Sun kit

Sunblock SPF 30-50, sunglasses and a hat. Sumba is hot and most stops have no shade.

Trekking shoes or sandals

Required, not optional. The waterfall paths are the hardest part of the trip.

Drybag or backpack

Water-resistant. You will be near water on three of the four days.

Hard disk, 32GB or more

For the drone and mirrorless files, copied on day three. A flash drive is too slow for the size.

Power bank

Long days out of the car, and early starts for sunrise.

Personal medication

Plus wet wipes, a change of clothes and bath things if you want your own.

A Telkomsel SIM

The one provider with usable signal across the island.

Snacks and supplements

To carry you between the nine meals on long driving days.

Getting there

Same list, every trip
