A road winding through the green hills of Tanarara in East Sumba

Seasons

Sumba changes colour twice a year

Green from December, gold from June. Neither is the wrong answer - they are two different islands, and the trip runs through both.

In short

The trip sheet splits the year into three: green season from December to March, the turn from green to yellow across April and May, and yellow season from June to November.

  • Green season is the wet months - hills at their most vivid and the waterfalls at full flow.
  • April and May sit between the two, still green and already drying out.
  • Yellow season is the dry savanna the island is photographed for, and the waterfalls run lower.
  • Open trip departures run every Thursday through all three, 53 of them in 2026.

Choosing

What each season gives you

The route does not change. What you see on it does.

December to March

Green season. Hills at their greenest and the waterfalls heavy. Expect rain, and roads that take it badly.

April and May

The turn. Still green, already drying. The quieter middle of the year.

June to November

Yellow season. Dry savanna, clear skies for the drone, and lower water at the falls.

February and March

The Pasola window, which is inside green season. The date is never fixed far ahead.
